IASOA Side Meeting at the IPY Conference in Oslo PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 May 2010

We invite you to a lunch-time meeting during the International Polar Year Oslo Science Conference (OSC) on Thursday June 10, 2010 from 12:30 to 13:30 in the Barentsburg Room (at the OSC venue).  This will be an informal get-together for scientists associated with any of the IASOA observatories:  Abisko (Sweden); Alert and Eureka (Canada); Barrow (USA); Cherskii and Tiksi (Russia); Ny-Ålesund (Norway); Pallas and Sodankylä (Finland), and Summit (Greenland).

Agenda:

(1) Ascertain interest in holding small science meetings focused on specific topics such as black carbon, cloud, aerosol, flux, or chemistry measurements from the IASOA observatories.

(2) Discuss the feasibility of IASOA observatories participating in rapid response activities such as real-time monitoring and communications regarding the Iceland volcano eruption and the subsequent long-range transport of ash.

(3) How can IASOA increase contributions to and use of the IASOA web site (www.iasoa.org)?  The main feature of our web site is a comprehensive listing of atmospheric measurements from the IASOA observatories, with links to data bases.  We would like to have more participation from the Arctic community as both providers of data information and as users of the information.

(4) Introduce the new IASOA Passport.

(5) Enjoy lunch and have a chance to network and socialize with other Arctic atmospheric scientists!

Please RSVP to Lisa Darby (lisa.darby@noaa.gov) if you plan on attending our meeting at the OSC.

Future of Arctic Sea Ice and Global Impacts:  The website describes the relationship seen between the loss of the summer sea ice and a warmer atmosphere in the Arctic in autumn.  Climate models also show that changes in the Arctic can impact weather in the mid-latitudes.  Click here to visit this new NOAA web site.

EUREKA 2010: Canadian Arctic Science at 80N

The "Eureka 2010:  Canadian Arctic Science at 80N" workshop took place in Ottawa, ON January 13-15, 2010.  For many scientists this meeting afforded the first opportunity to meet other Eureka scientists and staff that they had only previously had phone or email contact with.  The workshop allowed scientists to share their scientific results and to build potential collaborations. The presentations gave an indication of how rich and varied the research activities at Eureka are and how important Eureka measurements are for assessing the effects of climate change in the Arctic.

IASOA played an active role in the meeting by inviting scientists from other IASOA observatories to present information about their observatories in order to foster collaborations.

EUREKA 2010: Canadian Arctic Science at 80N

For over 60 years, the Canadian station at Eureka, Nunavut (80N, 86.4W) has provided a base for research in the High Arctic as well as fulfilling its role as a weather station for Environment Canada. Over that time, a substantial body of research has been accomplished and a large group of researchers have utilized the facility. However because of the varied nature and timing of the research, these groups have rarely met together. More recently, International Polar Year has provided opportunities for researchers from various international stations to collaborate with the researchers at Eureka, particularly those who are part of the International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA).

The aim of this workshop is to bring together the various research groups that utilize the facilities at Eureka, Nunavut for science research in the High Arctic to share research and results and to offer plans for future research and future collaboration. It is hoped that by providing this workshop venue, collaborations can be stimulated and strengthened. Logistics for activities at Eureka are a continual challenge and increased dialog and sharing of resources can be very beneficial. Eureka is a unique resource for Canada and innovative ideas for future activities and facilities will be welcome. The workshop format will be informal with opportunity for both presentations and discussion.

We encourage researchers from other IASOA stations to attend this meeting.  We will be holding a round table discussion about potential collaborations among the IASOA stations.
