2012 Arctic Report Card

The latest Arctic Report Card was released at AGU on December 5.  Atmospheric results from the annual roll-up include updates on 2012 temperature anomalies as well as greenhouse gas and UV baseline measurements from Arctic observatories.  Observations show that increases from human sources in greenhouse gases continue, while warm air temperature anomaolies were relatively small compared to the last decade.  Click here for more information.

IASOA at WMO-GCW

Represenatives from the IASOA consoritum will travel to Vienna, Austra Nov 20-22, 2012 for the First WMO-GCW-CryoNet Implementation meeting to share IASOA experiences with network coordination in a pan-Arctic context and contribute to areas of common value for the co-development of IASOA and CryoNet.  Click here for more information and look for updates after the meeting.

New UNIS Course

The Arctic Atmospheric Boundary Layer and Local Climate Processes

Objective: After the course, the student will have an understanding of physical processes typical for the Arctic atmospheric boundary layer, how the Arctic boundary layer differs from that at lower latitudes; the challenges of taking meteorological measurements and a basic understanding of how numerical models in the Arctic work.

Registration Deadline: 15.Oct.2011

Papers are invited for Session A35:  Cooperative Studies Incorporating Measurements from Land-Based Atmospheric Arctic Observatories

The main mission of the International Arctic Systems for Observing the Atmosphere (IASOA) is coordination of atmospheric data collection and observatories.  The effort supports the International Polar Year (IPY, www.ipy.org), but is intended to establish a continuing network consortium into the foreseeable future.  Data of interest to the IASOA consortium include measurements of standard meteorology, greenhouse gases, atmospheric radiation, clouds, pollutants, chemistry, aerosols, and surface energy balances.  IASOA is responsive to growing evidence that the earth system may be approaching environmentally critical thresholds within decadal time scales.  The information from IASOA will not only enhance scientific understanding but will also support decisions by the global community regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The IASOA IPY project invites papers on Arctic atmospheric research.  We are particularly interested in receiving papers comparing measurements from two or more of the IASOA observatories:  Abisko (Sweden); Alert or Eureka (Canada); Barrow (USA); Cherskii or Tiksi (Russia); Ny-Ålesund (Norway); Pallas or Sodankylä (Finland), and Summit (Greenland).  Papers addressing Arctic climate change attribution (why things are changing), not just trends (how things are changing), are particularly desirable.  Results from recent IPY Arctic experiments, analyses of long-term measurements, and satellite or model assessments using IASOA measurements are encouraged.
